Where Fine Carpentry Met a Complicated Hillside

This Scotts Valley backyard had the kind of quiet complexity K&D knows well: elevation changes, heavy drainage needs, structural concrete, fine carpentry, and an outdoor kitchen that had to feel easy to use once the work was done.

K&D brought the project together with an open-air pergola, pavers, artificial lawn, citrus trees, edible plantings, ornamental concrete, and outdoor living details shaped around the property’s grade.

The Challenge

The finished details mattered, but the real challenge was what had to happen underneath them.

The elevation changes were significant. The drainage was complicated. The finer details, including carpentry, concrete, pavers, planting, and the outdoor kitchen, all depended on the site being planned correctly from the start. K&D had to think through how water would move, how each level would connect, and how the finished space would feel once the technical work disappeared into the background.

The goal was simple: make a complicated property feel easy to use.
